The Five-Year Transition Checklist

What to Plan Before the Next Adventure Begins

Here’s your Fina Road-style checklist, realistic, calm, human, and focused on what actually matters. It’s not a “project plan”, rather it’s a grounded guide for building the Next Adventure across those five years.

This isn’t a “to-do” list, it’s a “get-ready” list.

The goal isn’t to tick boxes, but to gently move from a life built around work to one built around exploration, curiosity, and time that truly belongs to you.

🧭 Mindset & Direction

  • Start imagining what “the Next Adventure” really looks like : travel, slower living, volunteering, sailing, or simply more space to breathe.
  • Reframe how you talk about this next phase : not retirement, but reinvention.
  • Begin letting go of the need to be productive all the time : you may feel like you’re just wasting time.
  • Practise days without structure : learn what unplanned time feels like.
  • Talk openly with family or friends about your future plans (and listen to theirs).
  • Keep a small journal : not about goals, but about what draws your attention and energy.

💰 Finances & Foundations

  • Audit your full financial picture : income streams, savings, superannuation/pension, 401k, investments, property rent . . . and expenses.
  • Identify what “enough” looks like : the number that supports your chosen lifestyle.
  • Reduce debt wherever possible; simplicity is the best safety net.
  • Reallocate spending from things to experiences : practise living like you already have time.
  • Build a travel or adventure fund distinct from your daily living money.
  • Check insurance and medical cover for long-term or overseas travel.
  • Create a plan for regular income or access to funds while away.

🌏 Home & Logistics

  • Decide whether you’ll keep, rent, or sell your home.
  • Start decluttering early; every drawer now saves stress later.
  • Copy & digitise important documents. Store digital copies online in a secure, safe service.
  • Simplify possessions until what’s left feels manageable and intentional.
  • Research mail redirection, storage, and remote bill management.
  • If travelling long-term, test-run being “location light” for a few weeks.
  • Have a backup team : a network of reliable people who can help when needed.
  • Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) when travelling (link to Nomadic Matt) : useful if you need to show your at an IP address in your home country, security, etc

✈️ Adventure Planning

  • Define the spirit of your travel: slow exploration, long-term voyages, seasonal escapes.
  • Choose your travel base (boat, camper, backpack, apartment, etc.).
  • Research visas, long-stay options, and travel health requirements.
  • Practise “mini adventures” : a few weeks away to test your rhythm and gear.
  • Learn local basics for a few dream destinations; the language, customs, & culture.
  • Plan for connection: how you’ll keep in touch with family and community.
  • Keep a “next ideas” list rather than an itinerary, to leave room for spontaneity.

❤️ Health & Energy

  • Get a full health check and any procedures done before you go. eg wisdom teeth removed, existing injuries fixed up . . .
  • Focus on fitness for endurance and mobility, such as walking, stretching, swimming.
  • Learn basic yoga & have a 15/20 minute routine to do a few times a week, while you travel – to keep all your muscle groups moving
  • Practise healthy routines you can take anywhere; sleep, movement, hydration.
  • Keep digital copies of health records and prescriptions.
  • Build resilience for travel: vaccinations, first-aid basics, local care knowledge.

💬 Relationships & Community

  • Discuss plans openly with your partner or travel companion – expectations, pace, alone time.
  • Build or join communities of travellers and like-minded explorers.
  • Nurture friendships that can travel across distance and time zones.
  • Plan how you’ll give back; volunteering, mentoring, sharing stories.
  • Make sure your “goodbyes” are replaced by “see you soons.”

🧘 Emotional Readiness

  • Accept that change feels strange, that’s normal.
  • Allow a “neutral zone” for the in-between time when you’re neither working nor travelling yet.
  • Notice the small joys of unstructured days, like coffee without rush, walks without purpose, ambling along
  • Learn to say yes without checking your calendar.
  • Trust that slowing down doesn’t mean stopping, it means starting differently.

🗺️ Final Preparation

  • Create a flexible first-year plan of rough direction, not rigid itinerary.
  • Tie up financial and legal details (wills, powers of attorney, travel documents).
  • Notify important contacts of your new lifestyle and how to reach you.
  • Practise being away, like a 3-month “trial run” to test your systems and mindset.
  • Mark your official departure day on the calendar & and celebrate it early.

The Big Picture

Five years isn’t about finishing work, it’s about starting your life again.
Each year, you’re not retiring; you’re rehearsing the Next Adventure.

By the time you leave work, the practicalities will be sorted, but more importantly, you’ll be ready to go.
